Barcodes and Labels for Shops: A Practical Guide
Barcodes make billing fast and accurate — but only when every code points to exactly one item and pack. A few simple rules keep the counter running smoothly.

1. Use the manufacturer’s barcode where there is one
Most packaged goods already carry a barcode. Save it on the item once, and every scan finds the right product.
2. Print your own labels for loose and unbranded items
Loose items, local products and goods you repack need your own labels. Print the item name, price and a barcode — on A4 label sheets or a roll printer.
3. Keep your item code and the barcode separate
Your own item code identifies the item in your books; the barcode is what the scanner reads. Keeping them separate means you can add or change barcodes without changing your records.
4. One barcode, one item
A barcode saved on two items makes the counter bill the wrong product. Check for duplicates whenever you add a barcode, and fix them before they reach a bill.
5. A barcode for each pack size
If a box and the strip inside it have different barcodes, link each to its own pack size — so scanning the box bills a box.

Do I need a special printer for labels?
Labels can be printed on A4 label sheets with a normal printer, or on a roll label printer.
What happens with a duplicate barcode?
The scanner cannot tell which item is meant, so the bill can go wrong. Keep each barcode on one item only.
