Selling in Cartons, Dozens and Pieces: Managing Multiple Units
The same item often sells three ways: a carton to a shop, a dozen to a small retailer, a single piece at the counter. If stock is kept in only one unit, every sale in another unit needs a mental calculation — and mistakes follow.

Keep stock in the smallest unit you ever sell — usually the piece. Every bigger unit is then a fixed number of pieces.
| 1 piece | base unit |
|---|---|
| 1 dozen | 12 pieces |
| 1 carton | 48 pieces (4 dozen) |
| Stock: 3 cartons + 5 pieces | 149 pieces |
2. Give each unit its own price
A carton usually sells for less per piece than single pieces. Set a price for each unit rather than multiplying the piece price.
3. Give each pack its own barcode
A carton often carries a different barcode from the piece inside it. Linking each barcode to its unit means scanning a carton bills a carton, not one piece.
4. Use price tiers for customer types
Retailers, wholesalers and sub-distributors pay different rates. Keep a price tier for each type so the right rate appears on the bill automatically.
5. Count stock in mixed units
When counting, write cartons and loose pieces separately, then convert. “3 cartons and 5 pieces” is easier to count than “149 pieces”.
